Volunteering at Active Generations

You can volunteer anytime at Active Generations and stay active while helping others. We have over 1,000 volunteers in six different departments. That may sound like a lot, but there’s always the need for more. Volunteering through Active Generations provides you the opportunity to help your community and help others, all while learning new things and meeting new people.

Why Volunteer?

Active Generations is fortunate to have the best volunteer team in the Sioux Falls community. Over 450 volunteers help run Center programs, volunteer in the Adult Day Services and are making a difference to homebound elderly through the Workers on Wheels program. Volunteer Opportunities

Advisory Board Members

Active Generations is looking for individuals who would be willing to serve a one- or two-year term on our departmental Advisory Boards. These boards meet approximately four to six times a year. Ask a department director for more information if you are interested in getting involved with decision making for our programs.

Craft Instructors

We know we have many talented members in the area of arts and crafts. We are looking for members who would share their love for art and help teach others. Classes can be set to match your schedule.

Craft Volunteers

Help volunteer crafters make crafts to sell in the gift shop and at our Holiday Bazaar. All skill levels of interested volunteers are needed. Come learn how any Thursday after 10 a.m. in Room 201.

Care Callers

Active Generations is looking for volunteers to call homebound seniors each morning for “reassurance calls”. This service is invaluable for individuals who do not have family to count on. They are reassured that in case they fall ill or need help that a phone call is coming soon.

This volunteer opportunity takes only a few minutes each day. So little time – but it makes a huge difference to so many people. To volunteer please contact Jenny at 605-336-6722.

Fitness Center Mentors

Do you like to work out? Have you used our Fitness Center? Consider becoming a Fitness Mentor. You would be scheduled during weekdays to be at the desk in the Fitness Center to help members with equipment questions, sign-in procedures and other needs. This is a two-to-three hour commitment once or twice a week. Your choice!

Meals on Wheels: Drivers, Packers and Hosts

Do you have 1-2 hours, (depending on the role you fill) a day, a week, or in a month to help the Senior Nutrition Program at Active Generations?  We are in need of Meals on Wheels (MOW) delivery drivers, MOW serving line meal packers and dining room hosts/hostesses. We serve lunch meals 5 days per week. MOW delivery time is from 10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., most routes only take one-hour and you can do it during your lunch hour. If you prefer to be part of the MOW meal packing, assembly begins at 9:30 a.m. and usually runs until 10:30 a.m. If you like to meet and greet people, the host/hostess position would be perfect for you. Lunch service time is from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Volunteering is a rewarding experience, often times the volunteer gets more out of volunteering than the recipient does.

Dining Room Host

Active Generations has a Fun and Rewarding Volunteer Opportunity Just for You!  We are in need of Dining Room Hosts.  Hours are 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday .  Duties include carrying trays for diners if needed, helping dining guests find a seat, assisting a diner with emptying their tray after they have finished their meal, filling coffee and water pitchers as needed, cleaning tables after service.  Contact Chef Dan at 605-333-3309 or stop by The Kitchen at Active Generations.

Volunteer Mentors

Looking for outgoing members who want to share their passion and love of their clubs or activities with our new Active Generations members. Volunteer mentors would call new members to welcome them as new members, meet with them if the new member desired and introduce them to club leaders or other Active Generations members. This is not a big time commitment but has a BIG impact on new members in making them feel welcomed and comfortable!

Workers on Wheels Volunteers

Workers on Wheels (WOW) is a volunteer program offering minor home repair, yard work, light housekeeping and transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping. Services are provided by volunteers who donate their time and talents to enable our clients to continue living independently in their homes. There is no cost for the services provided, but clients are responsible for any supplies needed to complete a project. WOW serves moderate income seniors, 60 and older, who are unable to physically do the work themselves and have no adult children in Sioux Falls to help with the services needed. This is a flexible volunteer opportunity, as we ask you to commit to a project only according to your schedule and your abilities.
