December Member Spotlight – Jane Novotny

One of Jane’s retirement dreams was to learn and play Mah Jongg, a game combining skill, luck, socialization, and strategy. She pursued this goal with dedication, playing in various groups around Sioux Falls before being encouraged by Diane Biver to visit Active Generations (AG). In 2023, Jane joined AG’s Friday morning Mah Jongg group, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter in her life.

After taking lessons, Jane was eager to play more and put her new skills to the test. When AG’s Mah Jongg instructor retired, Jane was ready to step in. Since taking on the role, she has led eight full classes, four Siamese learning groups, and organized four “beginner practice” series to help new players gain confidence.

Jane’s enthusiasm extends beyond teaching; she has hosted special events like “Wine & Mah Jongg” to introduce players to AG-East, three “all day play” gatherings, two tournaments, and even coordinated a 1st Year Anniversary party attended by over 100 participants. Under her leadership, AG-East’s Wednesday afternoon Mah Jongg group has grown significantly, with weekly attendance peaking at 43 players. Jane treasures the inclusive atmosphere at AG, where players of all skill levels are warmly welcomed.

Beyond Mah Jongg, Jane enjoys reading, gardening, and collecting unique Mah Jongg sets. The photo featured includes an appetizer she crafted for her book club when they read Remarkably Bright Creatures, inspired by the story’s octopus’ protagonist.

Originally from Ree Heights, SD, Jane graduated from the University of Iowa and spent most of her career in insurance. She has lived in Sioux Falls for many years, with stints in Minneapolis and Omaha. She shares her home with her sister, Julie, and their beloved mutt, Merle, whose big ears and bigger heart perfectly match the warmth Jane brings to AG.
